Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Project

The Government of the Republic of Turkey and the Government of the Russian Federation signed an intergovernmental agreement called Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Turkey on cooperation in relation to the construction and operation of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) at the Akkuyu Site in the Republic of Turkey, to cooperate for constructing and operating Turkey’s first nuclear power plant in Akkuyu Site in Mersin, in May 2010.


The objective of the agreement is to construct of Akkuyu NPP (totally composed of 4 units designed of Russian VVER having a total capacity of 4800 MW).

As the first nuclear power plant; Akkuyu is planned to start up generating power by 2019.
